Gràcia was an independent town until 1897, and it still feels like one: low buildings, small squares and a strong local identity. The quests follow its history through the squares — Plaça de la Vila, Plaça del Diamant, Plaça del Sol — and climb to Gaudí’s first house, Casa Vicens, and to Park Güell. In the evening Gràcia fills up: vermouth bodegas, gin bars, jazz and jam sessions.
From the quest: Up the Hill to Gaudí
Gaudí before he became "Gaudí".
Gaudí's first major building (1883–85), a UNESCO World Heritage site, raised when Gràcia was still its own town. Lived in as a private home for over a century and a museum only since 2017 — tiles, palm-leaf ironwork and Moorish geometry from a Gaudí still finding his voice.
From the quest: The Town That Tried to Secede
A bronze woman, a great novel, a shelter underfoot.
The statue of Colometa, heroine of Mercè Rodoreda's La plaça del Diamant — the greatest Catalan novel of the 20th century, set in these very streets. Beneath the square lies a Civil War air-raid shelter.
From the quest: Up the Hill to Gaudí
A garden city that never was — now everyone's park.
Eusebi Güell's failed dream: sixty plots for a garden city for the bourgeoisie, of which only two houses were ever built. What survives is the public part — the mosaic dragon on the stair, the hall of 86 columns meant to be a market, and above it the serpentine bench curling round Nature Square. The city bought the land and opened it as a park in 1926.
