El Born — officially Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera — was the medieval merchants’ quarter. Carrer de Montcada is a row of Gothic palaces, several of them museums today, and Santa Maria del Mar stands at the heart of it all. Around it are the Palau de la Música, the Santa Caterina market with its wavy roof and the Parc de la Ciutadella. The same narrow streets are some of the best in the city for tapas and cocktails.

The 'Cathedral of the Sea' — but never a cathedral.
This was the people's church, raised in just 54 years (1329–1383) by the bastaixos, the port workers who hauled the stones from Montjuïc on their own backs. Inside there is no clutter, just wide-spaced octagonal columns pulling your eye to the light — a stone forest, not a church.

The mirror-makers' street, watched by a grotesque stone face.
On the corner with Vigatans, look up: a long-haired stone face with half-closed white eyes — a 'carassa.' In an illiterate port city, these grotesque heads were a silent sign: where the face looked, a brothel waited.
From the quest: Born Through a Lens
A riot of Modernista mosaic, glass and sculpture — a UNESCO gem.
Domènech i Montaner's 1908 concert hall is one of the most photographed buildings in the city: a fantasia of floral mosaic columns, stained glass and stone sculpture bursting off the façade. The exterior corner and the busts on the balcony are a photographer's feast — and the café 'Carmela' at its foot makes an easy pause.
