Sants-Montjuïc

Hills, gardens & museums

Sants-Montjuïc joins two very different worlds. Montjuïc hill was dressed up for the 1929 International Exhibition and again for the 1992 Olympics: the Magic Fountain, the Palau Nacional, the castle, and gardens with views over the port. Below it, Sants and Poble-sec are working neighbourhoods built around old textile mills — now parks, cultural centres and some of the liveliest tapas streets in the city.

A few stops worth the walk

Font Màgica de Montjuïc

From the quest: The Hill Built for the World

A fountain that dances to music and light — at set times.

Built by Carles Buïgas for the 1929 Exposition, the Magic Fountain sits on the axis between Plaça d'Espanya and the palace above. By day it is an ordinary large fountain you can walk right up to, water running as at any other. What made it famous only happens on a schedule: on certain evenings the water is choreographed to coloured light and music in a show that draws crowds to the steps.

Mirador de l'Alcalde

From the quest: The Balconies of Montjuïc

A terraced lookout with a mosaic hidden underfoot.

A viewpoint laid out in 1969 as a set of stepped terraces linked by stairways, dropping down the hillside with the whole eastern city in front of you. At the entrance stands the Sardana sculpture, its dancers mid-step. Look down as well as out: part of the ground is a large abstract mosaic of coloured stone and glass set into the paving.

Les Quatre Columnes

From the quest: The Overgrown Corners of Montjuïc

Four columns that were demolished by a dictatorship and quietly rebuilt.

Four Ionic columns raised in 1919 by Josep Puig i Cadafalch as a deliberate symbol of the four red bars of the Catalan flag. A dictatorship had them torn down in 1928, precisely because of what they stood for, and for over eighty years the spot stood empty. They were rebuilt in 2010, on the original spot beside the fountain, as close to the originals as the record allowed.
