Les Corts

Home of Camp Nou

Les Corts was a village of its own until the late 19th century, and today it is best known for FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou. The quests show another side: Gaudí’s wrought-iron dragon gate at the Güell estate, the royal palace gardens of Pedralbes and the Gothic monastery above them, the old farmhouse where Barça’s youth academy grew up, and the quiet squares of what remains of the village.

A few stops worth the walk

Porta del Drac

From the quest: The Dragon and the Scattered Gates

Gaudí's wrought-iron dragon, guarding the gate to an estate that no longer exists.

This snarling iron dragon is one of Gaudí's earliest masterpieces — the gate to the Finca Güell, the country estate of his great patron Eusebi Güell, built between 1884 and 1887. Its wings, jaws and clawed foot are forged in a single restless sweep of iron. This was Gaudí's first real playground: here he first used the broken-tile trencadís and the parabolic arch that would define everything he made later. Two fairy-tale pavilions flank the gate — an octagonal porter's lodge and the old stables.

Monestir de Pedralbes

From the quest: The Palace, the Cloister and the Machine

A 14th-century Gothic monastery around the largest cloister of its kind on Earth.

Queen Elisenda de Montcada, last wife of King Jaume II, founded this monastery of Poor Clares in 1327 and retired here as a widow. At its heart is a serene three-storey cloister — reckoned the largest Gothic cloister in the world — wrapped around a medicinal garden. The single-nave church holds Elisenda's tomb, and a tiny side chapel keeps luminous 1346 murals by Ferrer Bassà, one of Catalonia's first named painters.

La Masia

From the quest: Where Barça Grew Up

The 1702 farmhouse that became the most famous football academy in the world.

This modest Catalan farmhouse, built in 1702, was bought by FC Barcelona in 1950 and first used as the site office for building the Camp Nou next door, then as the club's headquarters. From the 1980s until 2011 it was 'La Masia' — the residence where the club's young players from out of town lived and trained, the cradle of a whole generation of stars.
