The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of Barcelona: the Roman colony of Barcino lies beneath its streets, and the medieval city was built on top of it. Today it is a tangle of narrow lanes between the Cathedral, Plaça de Sant Jaume and Plaça Reial. Most visitors cross it on the way to somewhere else. The quests here slow you down — Roman columns hidden in a courtyard, the lost Jewish quarter, taverns that have been pouring for a century, and the corners that look best at dusk.
From the quest: Roman Barcino: The City Beneath
Four 9-metre Roman columns hidden inside a medieval courtyard.
Slip through a plain wooden door on Carrer del Paradís and a narrow Gothic courtyard opens onto four Corinthian columns nearly 9 metres tall. They are the last standing piece of the temple to Emperor Augustus, once the towering religious centre of Roman Barcino's forum. Everything else was quarried away over the centuries — these four survived by being swallowed inside later buildings.
From the quest: El Call: The Lost Jewish Quarter
One of the oldest synagogue sites in Europe.
Behind an unassuming door hides what may be one of Europe's oldest synagogues, with foundations going back to Roman times. It served Barcelona's Jewish community until their expulsion, then vanished into the city fabric for centuries before being rediscovered.
From the quest: Stones That Remember
Thirteen geese guarding a martyr's memory.
A Gothic cloister of palms and orange trees around the Font de les Oques, home to thirteen white geese whose cackling carries through the cathedral.
