Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is Barcelona’s uptown: former villages and summer estates climbing towards the Collserola hills. Sarrià itself was a separate town until 1921 and still keeps its village square and market. Up here you find the lesser-known Gaudí — Bellesguard and the Teresianes school — Modernista villas, quiet gardens and, at the very top, Tibidabo with its church looking over the whole city.
From the quest: Castles, Sultans & Spider Webs
Gaudí's castle, built where a Catalan king died.
Built between 1900 and 1909, and unlike almost anything else he made: straight lines, narrow gothic windows, battlements. The site is the reason. Martí I the Humane, the last king of the Catalan line of the House of Barcelona, lived at Bellesguard until his death in 1410, and Gaudí designed a building halfway between gothic and modernisme to answer that history rather than ignore it.
From the quest: Sweets, Steel & a Summit
Two churches stacked on the summit, one on top of the other.
Enric Sagnier's design, begun in 1902 and not finished until 1961, when his son Josep Maria Sagnier Vidal completed it. It is two buildings in one: a lower crypt church, heavier and darker, built between 1903 and 1911, and the neo-Gothic upper church raised above it over the following four decades. A statue of the Sacred Heart crowns the whole thing.
From the quest: Gardens, Squares & a Balcony over the City
A hill in the middle of the city, with the sea behind the rooftops.
The Putxet is a hill of 178 metres standing inside the built city, and the gardens covering it climb in terraces linked by stone steps and ramps. From the viewpoint near the top you get a large part of Barcelona laid out below with the sea behind it — the city council calls this one of the most privileged lookouts in Barcelona, and it is free, unticketed and usually near-empty.
