El Raval grew outside the medieval wall as the city’s backyard: convents, hospitals and workshops first, crowded tenements later. It is still the most mixed and least polished part of the old town — a Romanesque monastery a few streets from MACBA’s white façade, historic bohemian bars next to Pakistani grocers, the Boqueria on its edge. The quests here separate the Raval worth seeing from the Raval you simply walk through.

Barcelona's oldest church, once alone 'in the field'.
Barcelona's oldest surviving church, the shrunken remnant of a Benedictine monastery that once stood alone among fields — which is exactly what "del Camp" (of the field) means. Its squat Lombard-Romanesque stone and tiny cross-shaped nave feel a thousand years older than the noise of the Raval outside the door.

A five-century Gothic hospital around an orange-tree garden.
For five centuries this was Barcelona's main hospital, four Catalan-Gothic wings wrapped around a courtyard garden of orange trees, the Jardins de Rubió i Lluch. Step in off the street and the city noise drops away under the vaulted stone galleries.

Botero's absurdly round seven-tonne bronze cat.
A seven-metre, seven-tonne bronze cat by Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero squats at the foot of the Rambla del Raval, absurdly round and endlessly photographed. You're meant to touch it, climb it, and pose.
